Self Awareness and Consciousness

By and large, people lack awareness of self and others. A man who does not know himself, does not trust himself. A man who does not trust himself cannot be free. A man who is not free, is not comfortable with others being free. If a man cannot get comfortable with freedom, he is vulnerable to the control of others. He will have an external locus of control. Rather than living a life of self-authorship, he will allow others to define him. He is not conscious of this capitulation of his agency. It is an unconscious process. As Goethe said, “No man is more hopelessly enslaved, than one who falsely believes he is free.”
